Traditional Diplomacy in the Contemporary World

One of the key and defining aspects of international relations is Diplomacy which can be traced back its roots at ancient times. Since then, diplomacy went through evaluation (just like technology) from old to new diplomacy. But many aspects Old diplomacy such as secret negotiations, bilateral meeting and sending ambassador to foreign countries still have relevance to the contemporary world as shown below.

The existence of multilateral negotiations which involves both state actor and non state actors is one of the major innovations of the new diplomacy. But this innovation is the product of tendencies that was visible long before the outbreak of the Second World War. In new diplomacy, negotiation usually takes places through great centres such as UN in the form of multilateral negotiations which involved by many parties. However the growing changes in diplomacy don't undermine the foundation of old diplomacy. Bilateral negotiations still exists and even some times it is critical in order to reach agreement.

The old diplomacy was based on secret negotiations which still has relevance in today. On the other hand the new diplomacy is said to be openness but it still contains some elements of secrecy. Diplomats argue that secrecy enhances the rationality and the objectives of all negotiating sides’ positions(plischka 1997,p49). Also the prospect of achieving an international agreement is directly proportionate to the level of confidentially maintained (IBID). Since the information given to the made can be regulated or controlled by the parties it involves. It is argued that the new diplomacy - just like old diplomacy it involves luck of transparency.

In conclusion, the old diplomacy is very ancient in the form of ambassador, secret negotiation or bilateral diplomacy, it is still remains the foundations of modern diplomacy and many aspects of old diplomacy is in use in the contemporary world it will remain relevance.
